On May 9, 2026, the "Academic Symposium on New Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypertension in the Elderly" was successfully held in Beijing, co-organized by the Hypertension Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, the Beijing Geriatrics Professional Quality Control and Improvement Center, and Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University. This conference, with the theme of "Empowering with Party Building and Addressing Public Concerns", thoroughly implements the Healthy China strategy and the national strategy of proactively responding to population aging. It closely adheres to the requirements of establishing and practicing a correct view of political achievements, upholds Party building leadership, academic innovation, and serving the people's livelihood, and continuously enhances the capacity for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases among the elderly.

This meeting clearly put forward that the greatest political achievement is to better control the blood pressure of the elderly, reduce cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, and improve their quality of life. The conference does not pursue "academic bubbles" or "conference bonsai", nor does it engage in formalism. Instead, it focuses on the most realistic and challenging clinical problems in the prevention and treatment of hypertension among the elderly, striving to transform research achievements into tangible health benefits for the people. This reflects the sense of responsibility and commitment that "success may not be attributed to me, but I will surely contribute to it", and takes "benefiting the people" as the fundamental criterion for measuring the effectiveness of academic work.

The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by Professor Hua Qi, honorary president of the Hypertension Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society and from Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University. Professor Fan Li, founding president of the Chinese Geriatrics Society and honorary director of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases (PLA General Hospital), and Professor Li Jing, President of the Hypertension Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society and from Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, delivered opening remarks. We extend a warm welcome to the experts and colleagues attending the conference. We emphasize that hypertension in the elderly has become a prominent public health issue affecting the health of the elderly. Strengthening standardized diagnosis and treatment, promoting early diagnosis and treatment, and implementing multi-disease management are important measures to safeguard the health of the elderly and enhance people's well-being. We hope that through academic exchanges, consensus can be reached and strength can be gathered, and research results can be transformed into practical benefits for the people.

This conference brought together authoritative experts in the field of geriatric hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in China to discuss the revision of the "Chinese Geriatric Hypertension Management Guidelines 2023". It combined the latest evidence-based evidence, updates to international guidelines, and domestic clinical practice issues and challenges In-depth exchanges were held on key issues such as blood pressure reduction targets for the elderly and frail population, individualized management of comorbidities, risk prevention and control of polypharmacy, standardized application of blood pressure outside the clinic, and intervention of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, with everyone expressing their opinions freely and reaching a consensus. The discussion focused on the traceability of evidence and the operability of recommendations, providing important academic support for the framework improvement, content refinement and quality enhancement of the new version of the guidelines, and promoting the revision of the guidelines to be more in line with national conditions and serve clinical practice.

The latest discussions cover the epidemic trends and prevention and treatment strategies of hypertension in the elderly, the co-management of hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in the elderly, the interpretation of differences between Chinese and foreign guidelines, the management of concomitant diabetes, the diagnosis and treatment of refractory hypertension, the differentiation of secondary hypertension, the characteristics of hypertension in women, obesity-related hypertension, the application of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine intervention, single-tablet compound preparation treatment, exercise rehabilitation and target organ damage assessment, etc The experts attending the meeting delivered multiple special reports and conducted in-depth discussions. Experts, combining the latest evidence-based evidence with clinical practice experience, shared new concepts, technologies and strategies. The content they shared was closely related to clinical practice, focused on difficult points and emphasized practical results.

More than 100 experts and representatives attended this academic conference. The on-site communication was lively and the interaction was in-depth. The participants unanimously agreed that the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in the elderly are confronted with challenges such as an aging population, coexistence of multiple diseases, complex medication, and high management difficulty. It is necessary to adhere to the leadership of the Party, the integration of medical treatment and prevention, the forward shift of the focus, and full-process management. We should continuously enhance the service capacity at the grassroots level, promote the downward allocation of high-quality resources, and transform academic achievements into practical results in serving the health of the elderly. With practical actions and achievements, we fulfill the mission of medical practitioners and contribute to the continuous advancement of Healthy China to new heights.
